FUE vs FUT: Why FUE Is the Gold Standard
When it comes to hair transplants, Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT, also known as the strip method) are among the most common methods.
FUE is the most modern of these procedures, allowing for donor grafts to be extracted individually and precisely placed. Smaller grafts allow for an easier, quicker recovery from the procedure, and expert techniques often garner a higher graft survival rate. The scars from FUE appear as tiny dots on the skin, which are easily concealed by your hair.
This is different to FUT, where donor grafts are harvested all at once as a strip of your scalp, leaving behind a linear scar that can be difficult to conceal. This larger graft also comes with a longer, more invasive recovery time, often involving more discomfort and obtrusive aftercare (such as caring for sutures).
Between FUE and FUT, at Royal Wharf Clinic we only offer FUE hair transplantation to our patients. Of its many benefits, FUE offers a minimally invasive procedure with a faster recovery time, more comfortable recovery, better graft survival rate, and minimal scarring, making it the gold standard of hair transplantation options.

The hair growth timeline following an FUE transplant can differ from person to person, but the progression is relatively linear. Below is a guideline of what the hair growth process can look like following your transplant procedure.
Months 1-2 | Shedding
Months 12-18 | Final Results
Day 1-2 | Initial Healing
The treated area will be swollen, and you will notice redness and scabs beginning to form.
Week 1-2 | Stabilisation
The area will likely become itchy around week 1, however the scabs will typically begin to fall off in the second week.
Months 1-2 | Shedding
Transplanted hair may begin to shed, allowing for new growth. Peak shedding may occur in week 2 (sometimes even longer) – this is referred to as ‘shock loss’ and is completely normal.
Months 3-4 | Early Growth
Initial, early stages of new hair growth will begin to show.
Months 6-9 | Visible Change
Your hair will begin to fill out in thickness and density.
Months 12-18 | Final Results
By Month 12, your hair has reached its natural, permanent appearance and results are now stable. From this point forward, your transplanted hair will continue to grow at the same rate as the rest of the hair on your head. Subtle refinements in density and texture may continue through Month 18 for the absolute final mature outcome.
Arrival & Check-In
You’ll be greeted and guided to a private surgical suite. Your consultant will review your treatment plan and answer any final questions. You will also need to sign consent forms.
Photography & Hairline Design
We’ll take before-photos for medical documentation. Your surgeon will mark and confirm the final hairline and/or transplant zones.
Anaesthetic
A local anaesthetic is administered to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure. You’ll remain awake and alert, with breaks provided as needed.
Extraction
Using the FUE technique, individual hair grafts are carefully extracted from the donor area at the back or sides of your head.
Graft Preparation
Once extracted, the grafts are meticulously sorted into singles, doubles, triples, and quadruples, then carefully prepared and preserved for implantation to ensure optimal survival.
Incision Creation
Tiny incisions are created in the recipient area by the surgeon with precise control over angle, depth and density to match your natural hair growth pattern.
Lunch Break
We’ll offer you a curated meal from Halal, Vegan or Chicken options along with caffeine-free refreshments
Implantation
Your extracted grafts are implanted one by one into the recipient zones. This step takes time and precision, every graft matters.
Aftercare and Recovery Pack
Once the procedure is complete, your scalp will be cleaned and we’ll provide your aftercare kit with medications, washing instructions, snacks and contact details.

FUE is suitable for treating a wide array of hair loss types and causes, including, but not limited to:
This isn’t an exhaustive list – as long as you have a healthy donor area, FUE treatment is usually a great option to help tackle hair loss.
You are always welcome to reach out to discuss your personal type of hair loss with our team, and whether FUE is appropriate for you if you’re unsure.
If you are someone experiencing thinning hair, a receding hairline or any other hair-related issue, a hair transplant could be the perfect solution for you. One of our specialist surgeons will have an initial consultation with you to discuss your issues and concerns, as well as assess your donor area viability (this can be either the back or sides of the scalp).
As long as your donor area is viable, you are likely a good candidate for a FUE hair transplant.
This will depend entirely on which hair-related issue you are dealing with. During your initial consultation, one of our surgeons will assess your hair and scalp, and after having an in-depth discussion with you regarding your preferences and goals, we will determine whether a hair transplant is the right solution for you, and work with you to create a personalised treatment plan.
Yes, both FUE and FUT hair transplants can achieve natural-looking final results. However, FUE has the advantages of a faster recovery time and leaving you with minimal scarring, which can be easily concealed by your hair. FUT will always leave a visible linear scar from the strip of donor tissue that is removed to create grafts, which cannot be concealed as easily.
Yes, our team of hair restoration experts are led by our Medical Director, Dr Shaan Mahmood (MBBS), who is renowned for his artistry and ability to create a completely natural appearance during the transplant procedure.
This, combined with our sole focus on FUE and our use of the most cutting-edge hair transplant technology, allows us to provide results that look completely natural while giving new life to your head of hair.
How many grafts you will need will depend on the severity of hair loss that you are experiencing. Our hair restoration specialists will be able to quickly assess this, and will provide you with the full details as part of your personalised treatment plan
Yes – a hair transplant is considered permanent, because the transplanted hair follicles are taken from areas of the scalp that are genetically resistant to hair loss (typically the back and sides of the head). Once transplanted, these follicles retain their resistance to hair loss and continue to grow in their new location for the long term.
However, it’s important to understand a key distinction:
The transplanted hair is permanent, however your existing, non-transplanted hair may continue to thin over time. For this reason, a hair transplant is often combined with ongoing hair loss management, such as medication or non-surgical treatments, to protect surrounding hair and maintain a natural, balanced result as you age.
At Royal Wharf Clinic, every transplant is planned with a long-term approach, considering future hair loss patterns, donor availability, and maintenance options so your results remain natural and sustainable for years to come.
Results vary depending on individual genetics, age, hair loss progression, and overall health. A consultation is essential to determine suitability and long-term expectations.
All of our hair transplants are performed under local anaesthesia, and most patients only report mild discomfort during the procedure.
FUE does leave tiny circular scars when harvesting the hair follicles from your donor area; however, these are typically covered by the patient’s hair and are far less noticeable than the linear scar left by FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation).
Depending on the patient’s length of hair, the donor site may be shaved to allow our surgeons better visibility and access to the hair follicles.
RWC patients need to take a 5 day course of antibiotics after the procedure and it is highly recommended to continue long term finasteride and minoxidil.
The recovery period from FUE is typically faster and less uncomfortable than other hair transplant procedures. Typically, patients find they are able to return to work within 3-5 days. However, patients should expect some scabbing and itchiness in weeks 1 – 3, with new hair growth beginning to show around 3 – 4 months after their procedure.
Our patients often find that they are able to return to work within 3 – 5 days.
New hair growth typically begins to show 3-4 months after your procedure. By months 12-18, your transplanted hair reaches its full mature appearance and will continue to grow at the same rate as the rest of the hair on your head.
Our prices range from £3000-£7,000 (+VAT), and vary depending on the complexity of the issue, how many grafts will be needed, etc.
